Avon was originally settled in 1645 as part of the town of Farmington. It was hence called Northington, until a land charter given to Puritans forced its annexation in 1830. Avon is home to numerous historical locations, including the 18th century Derrin Farmhouse, The Living Museum schoolhouse and the Pine Grove Schoolhouse. It was built in 1865, and was the last one room school house to close in Connecticut, in 1949. It is one of the remaining 19th century schoolhouses still in existence, complete with kerosene lighting, a central stove, and an outhouse. The old school still lives on in spirit, as "Pine Grove." It is the name of one the elementary schools that currently serves Avon's children.
Many famous people have lived in Avon as well, including former World Champion boxer Mike Tyson. Avon Old Farms, one of the most prominent private schools in the country is located here as well.
