Bolton

Bolton is a tiny town at the end of Rte 384, which doubles as a farm town, as well as a bedroom community for Hartford.  Its population is about 5,000, and the town is situated on 14.7 square miles of land, giving it a density of about 359 people per square mile. A drive through this town can be described as nothing short of tranquil bliss, with rolling hills and valleys dotting the landscape. Those who wish for vibrant nightlife and fine dining will be pleasantly surprised by the fact that the Buckland Hills area in Manchester is less than 15 minutes away!

Bolton, originally called Hanover, was incorporated in 1720 by settlers who were looking to leave the battles in Massachusetts between the colonists and the local tribes. By 1756, the population was close to 800 and grew quite rapidly. Many mills sprang up due to the abundance of water, in turn, expanding the agricultural capacity of Bolton.  Later, during the Revolutionary War, General George Washington is said to have spent some time in Bolton, along with the aiding French Army.  By the 1800s, Bolton was a bustling town with clothing stores, cigar shops and rock quarries, which were used extensively in the expansion of Hartford.

Today Bolton is not quite as agricultural as it used to be, but still maintains much of its agricultural charm, as the local historical society works to preserve Bolton?s piece of New England history.  Bolton has been home to several famous people, such as NHL player Ron Hainsey, and artist Ralph Earl. Earl is famous for having painted numerous period pieces, that historians have used to visualize and interpret life in colonies the 18th century.  Mainly an agricultural town, Bolton is becoming quite popular by residents, as a bedroom community to the insurance industry in Hartford, and is less than 20 minutes away from the capitol city.
