Cross Farms Recreation Area
Among the many town parks in Tolland, Connecticut, Cross Farms Recreation Area promises to be one of the best assets that the town will have, once it will fully be complete. Also known as Cross Farms Recreation Complex, the area is situated on Rhodes Road, neighboring Birch Grove Primary School. It is spread across 100 acres of land, comprising of different sports fields, trails and a unique disc golf course that is the only course of its kind in Tolland. It is because of this that Tolland residents often consider the Cross Farms Recreation Area as their hidden treasure.
The Cross Farms Recreation Area has 3 soccer fields, each of a size of 360' by 195'. This makes the complex a hot spot for all soccer clubs in Tolland. It also hosts a soccer camp in the summers for boys and girls aged 5-13, which is organized by the Tolland Soccer Club in conjunction with the Ray Reid Soccer School. In addition to soccer fields, the complex also has 2 baseball fields with 90 ft bases, and another field with 60 ft bases. These are used often by the local baseball leagues of Tolland.
The park offers hiking trails of more than a mile around the park limits, which connect to the nearby high school. A Family Fitness Trail is also available at the Cross Farms Recreation Area, which is used by weight watchers and fitness enthusiasts. The trails are densely surrounded with trees, and are perfect for walking and running.
Apart from these sporting amenities, perhaps the most unique feature of the Cross Farms Recreation Area is the official, PDGA-approved 18-hole disc golf course that is among the 80 disc golf courses in New England, and the only one in the town. Based in the woods, this course offers a unique opportunity to the players to enjoy the game of disc golfing in a scenic environment. Originally, the land on which the course is based was going to be used for a residential housing project. However, when that did not happen, the town bought the property for open space and converted it into a disc golf course.
Several important developments are also currently taking place at the Cross Farms Recreation Area, including building an ADA-accessible playground for children with special needs and health challenges. Once complete, the complex will certainly be a popular family spot for the residents of Tolland.
