East Granby

Situated in the northern region of Connecticut, East Granby is a small agricultural town located in the Farmington Valley.  It is bordered on either side by the Farmington River, and the Metacomet ridgeline, a mountainous region that stretches from the Long Island Sound, all the up to Vermont.  The highest points of this ridgeline in East Granby are Hatchill Hill, and Peak Mountain, the latter of which offers an astounding view of the Farmington Valley, as well as one of the state's most prominent historical locations, The Old Newgate Prison.

The East Granby historical site of Old Newgate Prison is one that dates back to the pre-revolutionary war.  Registered as a national landmark, the Newgate development was originally opened in 1705 as a copper mine. It was subsequently transformed into a prison by the colony of Connecticut, and used to house British nationalists and loyalists during the Revolutionary War.  In 1790, it became the first state prison in the entire country, and was kept in operation until 1827, when it was turned back into a mine. Today this area is still open to tourists and visitors who wish to capture a glimpse of our national history.

The East Granby of today is a relatively small, undeveloped town, with a population of about 5,000 people situated on 17.6 square miles of land, this give the town an extremely low population density of 289 people per square mile.  The Granby High School is known to be the smallest high school in the entire state.  Admittedly, East Granby is not for those who seek the urban metropolitan lifestyle, but for those who wish to get away from the everyday bustle and prefer a more traditional and quaint atmosphere, East Granby will do just fine.
