East Hartford is a densely populated suburban town bordering the capital city of Connecticut. It has around 50,000 residents, and is home to the headquarters of United Technologies, and a major regional Coca Cola bottling facility. It is also home to Rentschler Field, the official home game stadium of the University of Connecticut Huskies football team. It has a capacity of 40,000 people, which can be expanded if need be. Interestingly, the New England Patriots came very close to calling the proposed Hartford Rentschler Field their home, however the deal eventually dissolved, and the proposed stadium was moved to East Hartford. Since then a number of professional bands have also used the venue for concerts, including The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen.
Before its discovery around 1631 by European Settlers, this land was inhabited by the Podunk Indians, and various other river tribes. In 1651, Thomas Burnham purchased the land from the Podunks, and later willed it to his children. The town of Manchester was actually included in this initial purchase, until 1823, when it was annexed. Many historical locations are still in existence today and maintained by the Historical Society of East Hartford. Among this locations, are a blacksmith's shop built in 1850, and the Goodwin School house, built in 1820.
East Hartford has experienced amazing population growth, since its rural beginnings, and now has a population density of 2750 people per square mile. Despite this explosion, the town has managed to keep a number of tranquil attractions, such as Wickham Park. This area is an aggregation of several park areas including woodlands, ponds, picnic areas, softball fields, and the famed oriental gardens. The Hartford skyline can also be viewed from east side of the park.
