Farmington is an upscale community about 10 minutes west of Hartford. It serves at as bedroom community to the insurance industry in Hartford, but is an affluent one at that with beautiful homes and lush meadows.  It is home to the headquarters of several large corporations, including Carvel Ice Cream, Otis Elevator, and the Carrier Corporation. Farmington has also been cited as one of the "preppiest" towns in America, by "The Official Preppy Handbook."   It has a population of 25,000 on area of about 29 square miles, giving it a population density of about 888 people per square mile.

Farmington has an extremely rich history that can be dated back to the 17th century, when the Tunxis Indians inhabited the region.  In 1640, colonists settled the land, making it the oldest settlement west of the Connecticut River, as well as one of the oldest communities in the state.  It was an ideal place for growing crops, as the soil was very rich and it was along the natural body of water now known as the Farmington River. At the time, Farmington was bar far the largest of the Connecticut communities, divisions of its land spawning nine other communities that are separate towns today. Farmington was extremely active in the slavery abolition movement, as it was considered a major hub in the underground railroad.  Many 17th century establishments can still be seen today along the historical section of Main St.

Today, Farmington merits top rankings in numerous categories. It has one of the best school systems in the country, with its educational institutions ranking among the top every year. The Miss Porter School, one of the most famous all girls school in the country, is also established here, and has had many famous alumni. Among them are Jacqueline Kennedy Onnasis, Lilly Pulitzer and members of the Vanderbilt and Rockefeller families. The University of Connecticut Health Center, which employs over 5,000 people, is based in Farmington, and is one of the most prestigious Health Centers in the state.
