Glastonbury is a traditional, rural community in central Connecticut, bordering the Connecticut river. It was one of the largest towns in the state area-wise, and is home to several natural bodies, including Diamond Lake, and Meshomasic State Forest, one of the largest in the state. Glastonbury also happens to be the wealthiest town in the state, east of the Connecticut river. It can also be classified as a bedroom community to the insurance industry in the city of Hartford. Throughout the latter half of the 20th Century, Glastonbury has experienced spectacular growth, transforming it from an agricultural town to a sprawling rural community.
Glastonbury?s roots can be traced back to 1636, when the families of 30 settlers bought the land for about 40 ft of trading cloth. The town played a substantial part in the Revolutionary war, as it was home to one of the biggest gun factories at the time. After the war, Glastonbury was transformed into a major ship building hub, and later became home to the first commercial soap factory in the world. It is home to the oldest operating ferry in the country, traveling from Glastonbury to Rocky Hlll. The town also has a rich progressive history, as its slaves were freed in the 1780s, 60 years before slavery became illegal.
The Glastonbury of today, although much changed from the Glastonbury of Olde, still retains much of its old country charm. The town is host to the annual Glastonbury Apple festival, a traditional celebration of farmers? apple harvest in the region. It is also home to many prominent people, including professional Basketball player Kevin Ollie, Gale King, a famous news reporter, and Candace Bushnell, the creator of the popular HBO series, ?Sex in the City?
