Welcome to Manchester CT, a diverse, industrious community situated on the outskirts of Hartford, roughly equidistant from New York City and Boston, Massachusetts. Manchester is home to many points of interest in Connecticut, including the Shoppes at Buckland Hills, numerous historical landmarks and most notably, the Manchester road race which attracts over 10,000 participants each year. With a population of over 60,000, it is one of the larger towns in the Hartford metropolitan area, and continues to grow rapidly due to its convenient location and ubiquitous attractions. From posh shopping enclaves like Evergreen Walk, to trendy dining scene, Manchester has it all!
Also known as the "Silk City", Manchester CT has a rich history that dates all the way back to 1672. In that year, it was settled as a farming community, and quickly grew into an industrial town with many lumber and textile mills. Silk also became a huge industry here (hence the name "Silk City") and in 1838, Manchester residents created the largest silk factory in the world! Manchester CT is also home to Hilliard Company Woolen Mills, currently known as the Hilliard Mills. Started in 1780, it is the oldest Woolen Mill site in the country. In fact, Hilliard Mills is only one of many beautiful and historic sites that can be visited in Manchester today.
Manchester CT has the reputation of being one of the more diverse towns in the area due to the age difference among its residents. It is home to a huge number of baby boomers who settled here after the WW II, but it is also home to a sizable college population, as it is home to Manchester Community College, and within commuting distance of several larger colleges in the area. Communities such as Ribbon Mills show the great diversity that one can experience here. Manchester CT is also extremely multicultural, with residents of various ethnic backgrounds making up almost 20% of the population.
