Newington

Situated in the center of Connecticut, Newington is a bustling town with a strong and self sustaining local economy, and plenty of attractions.  It has a population of 30,000 people on 13.2 square miles, giving it a population density of 2,248 per square mile.  The median household income is $57,118, with much of the income coming from local industry. Newington's major artery, the Berlin Turnpike, is a major business district which serves the entire region.

Newington is home to the Connecticut Department of Transportation, and the Connecticut Distance Learning Consortium.  The D.O.T. is responsible for the development and maintenance of the state transport infrastructure, including bridges, Highways, transit entities, and waterways. It also manages Bradley International Airport.  The Connecticut Distance Learning Consortium is a Connecticut agency that fosters online learning activities and degree programs.  It was formed in 1996, when regional Colleges and Universities agreed to back a state funded body that could regulate the admission of education over the internet.  The Consortium maintains a list of all online courses available by state learning institutions, and facilitates their delivery.

Founded in 1871, Newington was annexed from Wethersfield, and immediately began to develop into an industrial center. Remnants of this past can be seen through its many historical locations including old mills and warehouses.  Newington is currently in the process of planning a substantial addition to the town's economic infrastructure by adding business outlets and hotels. Although Hartford is nearby, it is considered a lynchpin for most of its outlying towns, due to its high level of economic activity.
