Rocky Hill

Rocky Hill is a bedroom community of 18,000, serving the urban areas of Hartford and New Haven.  It was voted #1 Sports-friendly town in Connecticut by Sports Illustrated, due to the town's high level of involvement in community sport programs.  It also received #35th place in CNN/Money Magazine's "best places to live in the country" list, due to an excellent school system, fairly quick commutes to urban centers close by, and a strong local job market.  Rocky Hill is also home to WFSB Channel 3, one of the major regional television stations.  The town is situated on 13.8 square miles, giving it a deceptively large population density of 1,390 square miles.

Rocky Hill was incorporated in 1843, having originally been a part of Wethersfield.  The town?s population in 1850 was 1,042, rising to 5,000 in 1950, and quadrupling in size since then.  Rocky Hill is also home to a significant piece of ancient history, as it house Dinosaur State Park, one of the largest dinosaur track sites in the country.  These tracks can be dated back 200 million years ago,  and were made by a carnivorous dinosaur which roamed what is now the Central Connecticut Valley.  There are 2,000 tracks altogether; 500 that can be viewed, and 1,500 that are buried for preservation.

Rocky Hill is also home to the Glastonbury-Rocky Hill ferry, which is commonly said to be the oldest continually operating ferry in the country.  The ferry began operation in 1655, and has been in operation ever since, except for the winter seasons when the water freezes over.  Rocky Hill is also home to The State Veteran's Home and Hospital, and the Connecticut Library for the blind and physically handicap.
