Simsbury

 

Simsbury is an affluent town located in the Farmington Valley, and a destination of preference for many well to do people working in the nearby capitol of Hartford.  It has a population of 24,000 people, living on an area of  34.3 square miles, giving it a population density of 698 people per square mile.  Simsbury is also a favorite location for people who enjoy outdoor activities, as it is home to the metacomet ridgeline, and host notable attractions such as Talcott Mountain State Park, Penwood State Park, and the Tariffville Gorge.

Simsbury, which was regarded as a frontier town upon its inception, was founded in 1670, becoming Connecticut's twenty first town.  After several years however, the settlers left this area and what remained of Simsbury was torched by local Native American tribes.  Simsbury was home to the first steel mill in the United States, which opened its doors in 1728. Also, the first coins minted in New England, were struck from copper mines in Simsbury, by a resident named Dr. Samuel Higley.

Simsbury has been called home by many notable figures, including actress Jessica Biel, actress Sigourney Weaver, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., who spent some time working on a tobacco farm in order to save money for college. Simsbury also has a skating rink that has been used by numerous professional ice skaters, as well as Olympic competitors.  Sasha Cohen, Michelle Kwan and Alexei Yagudin are among those who have trained at its facilities. Simsbury is also home of Heublin Tower, a 165 ft. structure atop Talcott Mountain, constructed by Gilbert Heublin, a food a beverage person of interest in the region. The tower offers breathtaking views of the Hartford skyline and Farmington Valley.
