Somers

Situated in the Northern quadrant of Connecticut, Somers is a small town that is well known locally for its strong sense of community and excellent school system. In CNN/Money Magazine's annual list of great American towns, it was ranked in the top 100, which speak volumes to the contentment and satisfaction of its residents. It has a population of about 10,000, living on an area of 28.5 square miles, giving it a rural population density of 367 people per square mile. Its close proximity to Massachusetts makes it an ideal location for people on both sides of the border.

Originally known as East Enfield, Somers has a rich history that dates back to the beginning of the 18th century. In 1702, a colonist name Benjamin Jones settled the area as part of Massachusetts. It was later concluded, however, that the land surrounding Somers was surveyed incorrectly, and in 1749, was annexed and introduce into the Connecticut boundaries. In 1768, Massachusetts, in a bid to increase its land holdings, laid claim on Somers, and the matter was eventually settled in court, in Connecticut's favor. Thus, Somers lies on the upper most border of Massachusetts, within the boundaries of Connecticut.

Somers can be considered a joint bedroom community of Connecticut and Massachusetts, with a substantial amount of its residents working in both states. It is in close proximity to several major shopping hubs, including the Mall at Holyoke, and the Shoppes at Buckland Hills. Residents looking for night life should not fret, as they have the choice of enjoying their evenings in Hartford, or Springfield.  In addition, Somers is about 15 minutes away from the Big E, the largest annual fair in New England, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors, and is over 2 weeks long!
