Stafford Springs

Stafford Springs is located in the northern most area of Connecticut, directly bordering Massachusetts, and is one of the largest towns, area-wise in Connecticut.  The town consists of several smaller communities; Crystal Lake, Ellithorpe, Hydeville, Orcuttsville, Staffordville, Stafford Hollow, Village Hill, and West Stafford.  Although it has been able to maintain its small town atmosphere, Stafford Springs is rapidly expanding to become a bedroom community for the cities of Hartford and Springfield.

Stafford Springs was settled in 1719, and quickly gained a reputation as a mill town, due to its many water tributaries and proximity to the Connecticut river.  It supplied the Union Army with cannonballs and various other supplies, and as such was instrumental in the North's victory.  The Pinney Grammar School was later founded in 1909 in Stafford Springs, and became a prominent institution of learning in New England. Today, the remnant of this school is open to the public, free of charge.

Perhaps one of the most famous attractions of Stafford Springs is the Stafford Motor Speedway, which attractions thousands of spectators a year. It is a semi banked ½ mile paved oval, that hosts all types of racing events, from Nascar sponsored Whelen races, to demolition derbies.  Stafford Springs is also a prominent regional medical center, being home to the Johnson Memorial Hospital, which house facilities for various fields of medicine.  There are also several camping grounds, a beach, and hiking trails, that make it a great local summer destination.
