Suffield

Suffield Connecticut has a population of 15,000 and is minutes away from the border of Massachusetts. It covers an area of 43 square miles, making it one of the larger towns in Connecticut area-wise, and as a population density of 348 people per square mile.  Suffield is also home to a large segment of the Metacomet Ridge, a mountainous region that stretches from New Haven to the border of Vermont. Suffield has many beautiful natural attractions including Suffield Mountain and the Connecticut River.

Suffield was incorporated in 1682, and subsequently had a large impact on regional events. Oliver Phelps, once the largest landowner in the country, inhabited Suffield, as well as Cotton Gin inventor Thaddeus Leavitt and the early US Postmaster General Gideon Granger.  Suffield has also been home to several affluent families throughout the country's history, including the Dwight family of Northampton MA, the Hooker family of Hartford and the Dudley family of Guilford. One of the earliest Yale Medical School graduates, Dr. Asaph Leavitt Bissell, also grew up in Suffield.  Due to the town's initial wealth, it was known around Southern New England for its exquisite architecture and beautiful homes.  Many of these homes are still standing today, maintained by Suffield's historical society.

Suffield today is much more developed than its roots imply, however it still succeeds in maintaining an old style charm that is the pride of its residents.  Though it is extremely close to Springfield and Hartford, you would never know by its laid back atmosphere and winding country roads.  Suffield is an important part of New England's history, and indeed the history of our nation. But just as important, however, it is a great place to raise a family.
