Tolland

Tolland is a small town in the northeast quadrant of Connecticut, with a population of about 14,000 people.  It has been described as a bedroom community for Hartford?s Insurance industry, and home to many historical sites that are nationally recognized.  Tolland is regular ranked among the 40 best towns to live in America, by CNN/Money magazine.  This can greatly be attributed to its quaint neighborhoods and small town atmosphere, as well as its close proximity to the major hubs of Boston and NY.  It is also right down the road from the University of Connecticut, which makes it a extremely desirable location for students and educators alike.

According to local townsfolk, Tolland derived its name from its function as a toll stop between Boston and NY, when it was founded in 1715. It was incorporated 7 years later.  Of the many historical sites in Tolland, perhaps the most prominent are the Tolland Green and the Old Antique Store.  The Tolland Green is just about identical to when it was first established in the 18th century, and the Old Antique store, called ?Old Red and White? by locals, hasn?t changed much either. There is even a penny candy dispenser on the green, which has been in operation since the 19th century!

Neighborhoods in Tolland generally consist of large house on one acre plots of land, with lots of wooded forest in between. Population density is 331 people per square mile, one of the lower rates in the state. Simultaneously, the median income in Tolland is $106,000, making it one of the most affluent towns east of the Connecticut river. Dining enthusiast will also feel right at home here, as Tolland is home to several highly ranked restaurants specializing in different ethnic cuisines. All in all, Tolland is a perfect location for those who enjoy being close to the big city, but want to live in a small country setting.
