Vernon, home to 30,000 residents, is one of the larger towns in Tolland County. It has actually been consolidated with several smaller towns and villages, namely Dobsonville, Talcottville and Rockville. It has an area of 18.1 square miles, and an extremely urban-esque population density of about 1600 people per square mile. Not the place for people looking to slow down in a country atmosphere, but Vernon is certainly a great place for people who enjoy having shopping, dining, and everything they need within a stone's throw.
Vernon is home to a business and shopping district that is pretty spectacular in scope, considering its proximity to the Buckland Hill shopping area of Manchester. The Tri-City Plaza is a well known installment throughout Tolland County, and the Vernon Diner is one of the most recognized in the region. Vernon also houses the areas largest dealerships and is home to several regional business headquarters, including New Alliance bank, a significant employer in Connecticut.
Vernon has been home to many notable persons since its inception, including Professional football player Bill Romanowski, Senator Mark Warner, and Rock and Roll Hall of famer, Gene Pitney. Some may remember his nickname, the "Rockville Rocket," derived from his years in Rockville. The famous African American still life painter, Ethan Porter, also spent several years living in Rockville when he was a child. Many attractions grace Vernon as well, including The New England Civil War museum. The museum is noted for having a large number of genuine Civil War artifacts, and is home to over 1,000 volumes of civil War era literature.
