Willington

Willington is a small town in the northern most quadrant of Tolland County Connecticut, with a population of about 6,000 people. It is distributed over an area of about 33.5 square miles, giving it one of the lowest population densities in the state, of about 187 people per square mile.  It is known regionally for its natural beauty, and is a top destination for those who wish to capture traditional New England.  The town is so small that its secondary school students are split up among the schools of the much larger surrounding towns. Willington is beginning to expand, however, with the recent construction of a Library, and new real estate developments.

Willington was incorporated in 1727, and has been home to several prominent people through its history. One of the most notable was a famous historian, educator and minister.  He also served as the president of Harvard University, from 1849 to 1853.  The town of Willington named a street after him in his honor, close to the town green.  The town is also host to several properties dating back to the 19th century, which can be visited today. The town is also currently working on commissioning a historical society, to preserve locations that are deemed as traditionally valuable.

Today, Willington is a quiet, picturesque town that is minutes away from Interstate 84, one of Connecticut's major arteries, and about a half hour away from the capitol, Hartford, Connecticut.  It does not have much in the way of industry, but is home to a huge truck stop meant to serve truckers going between NY and MA. It also has several small inns for visitors looking for a place to stay, including the Roadway Inn.  From the looks of it, Willington will likely preserve its scenic vistas and natural beauty for a long while yet.
