Avon lies to the west of the Metacomet Ridge, the long basaltic ridgeline which slices north to south through several New England states and includes interesting walking trails in the vicinity of Avon (the Metacomet Trail, which is 51 miles long and traverses the ridge amid magnificent views, tree-clad slopes, and fascinating basaltic traprock formations). Some of the town lies on the skirts of this natural feature, and there is hilly terrain here as well as more level stretches.Avon is one of the suburbs of Hartford – or, more accurately, it is a suburb of the West Hartford suburb of the state’s capital, which lies immediately to the east on the far side of Metacomet ridge. Many people commute from Avon to work in West Hartford or Hartford proper, using Route 44, which cuts neatly through the center of Avon and is called “Main Street” near its junction with the town’s other major road, Old Farms Road. Route 44 climbs Metacomet Ridge, and includes two very sharp swerves, which have been the site of numerous traffic accidents, so caution is advised though the route has been improved at the point where it crosses the ridge.

Quite a bit of the town is wooded, though there is an immense golf course, the Blue Fox Run Golf Course, which is build on both banks of the Farmington River, which flows north to south through the town on a parallel course to Old Farms Road and is a favored recreational river. The downtown area of Avon features a large amount of paving and open space, but even here, there are trees for shade.

Education
There are several pre-collegiate schools in Avon, including two elementary schools, Roaring Brook and Pine Grove Elementary. From there, students move on to Thompson Brook Intermediate School, then Avon Middle School, before finally entering Avon High School. There is also a boarding school, Avon Old Farms School, in the town, for those who can afford it.

Economy
Farming and manufacturing, once the heartwood of Avon’s economic activity, are nowadays literally extinct. A number of retail and service establishments stand along the street’s at the town’s center, along Route 44 and the adjoining thoroughfares, and a series of three major shopping centers lie further west along this principal road. These include Nod Brook Mall Shopping Center, Plaza 44 Shopping Center, and Farmington Valley Mall Shopping Center. A good deal of the local buying and selling takes place at these locations, which are also a source of jobs.

Most of the town’s inhabitants, however, cross the Metacomet Ridge to work at the universities, medical establishments, or factories in West Hartford, while some venture farther afield to Hartford. The Blue Fox Run Golf Course is another source of money for the town’s economy.

Demographics
The two largest racial groups in Avon, Connecticut are whites, who compose 89.8% of the population, and Asians, who account for another 6.3%. African-Americans come in a distant third at 1.5%. The number of Asians in the town has more than doubled in the past decade. Avon is clearly an affluent bedroom community for Hartford, given its median household income of $112,714.

Unemployment stands at 6%, almost half the national average, while only 1.7% of the inhabitants are below the poverty line. The town is elderly, with a median age of 42, but almost two thirds of the households consist of a married couple and 34% of the 6,192 households include at least one child under 18.

Location within State
Avon is located in the northwest quadrant of the state of Connecticut, at the corner nearest the center of the state. The town stands due west of West Hartford, on the far side of Metacomet Ridge. It flanks the Farmington River, which was once used for water power by local manufacturing and explains why the town was founded where it is. West Hartford and Hartford are a very short commute away.
