Geography
Much of East Granby stands on very hilly terrain, since the Metacomet Ridge – a basaltic ridge that cleaves through much of New England from north to south – passes directly through the town’s center. Level ground occurs on the east in the form of Salisbury Plain, which is where Bradley International Airport is located, marking the extreme fringe of East Granby in that direction. The town’s west is rugged, with the hills blocking the view to Granby itself.

East Granby is a mix of farmland, forest, and residential roads clustered around Turkey Hills Road, the principal route of the town (which soon becomes Rainbow Road and leads to Bradley International Airport and points east). Main Street bisects this road. Two famous hills within the township are Peak Mountain and Hatchet Hill, which afford good views over the countryside, and the local landmark of Old Newgate Prison. The Farmington River forms the town’s south boundary as it takes a rare west to east loop in its generally north to south course.

Education
Due to its small size, East Granby has very few schools within its borders. There are two elementary schools in the town, Carl Allgrove Elementary and R.D. Seymour Elementary. Additionally, there is one middle school, named East Granby Middle School, and a high school, whose rather unimaginative but straightforward name is East Granby High School. East Granby High has the distinction of being Connecticut’s smallest high school.

Economy
Like most modern towns, East Granby’s economy is firmly centered on services and retail, with a fair number of professionals thrown in as well. Most necessary services can be obtained locally by the town’s residents. Besides the services, the picturesque town also enjoys a bit of seasonal tourist trade, with pleasant terrain and five buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.

Three nurseries also operate in the town, providing some work for those without an entry to the service or professional sectors, while there is even some small-scale manufacturing in the town. Specialized metal processing equipment, orbital welders, wires and cables, aerospace machining, and solar paneling are the town’s main contemporary manufactures.

Demographics
Whites are the main race in East Granby, with 95.6% of the town made up of them. African-Americans are 1.37% of the population, and Asians, at 1.05% of the inhabitants, are in third place. This is fairly unusual for Connecticut, where Asians typically outnumber African-Americans. The median household income is a robust $85,155 per year, with only 1.5% of the population under poverty level despite 6.8% unemployment.

Out of the 1,848 households in East Granby, only a meager 22% consist of married couples. Around 36% of households include one or more children under 18, but out of these, nearly two thirds have no father present. The town’s median age is 39 years.

Location within State
East Granby is a north central Connecticut town, and is part of Hartford County. The town includes a section of the Metacomet Ridge, and is clearly bordered by the Farmington River. The airport its eastern edge abuts on the Windsor and East Windsor town group that surrounds the Connecticut River on that side. Hartford lies almost directly to the south of East Granby.
