Tolland Town Profile

Tolland is a mostly forested township, with roads radiating outward from the town center around Tolland Green. These roads are heavily lined with houses, but the spaces in between are mostly wooded. The area is also quite wet. Shenipsit Lake lies at the western fringe of the town, dividing it from Rockville, which the town is a bedroom community of. There are more ponds in the town, such as Poehnert’s Pond on Tolland Stage Road, while Skungamaug Marsh lies in the northeast of the township.

The houses in town are well spaced despite their clustering along roads, with one acre lots being typical. There are seven parks and two state forests within the township, while Tolland Green, the centerpiece of this community, features colonial architecture that practically reeks of New England style, forming a picturesque hub for the man-made portions of Tolland. Interstate highway 84 runs through the town and provides ready access to Hartford, a roughly half-hour drive.

The population of Tolland is fairly low, but the number of children present in it is fairly high, compared to the rapidly aging communities a little to the west. Tolland Elementary Intermediate School, Middle School, and High School serve the town’s needs, as does Birch Grove Elementary School, which helps to take up the slack at the start of the educational pyramid.

Local economic activity is mostly retail or service, while the people who live in the town earn their bread by working at insurance companies or universities in Hartford. In short, a good percentage of the town consists of insurance agents and university professors. Local manufacturing is practically nonexistent, and farming is present but not a major part of the economic life of the community. Close to 70% of the working population works either in service, retail, or professional capacities.

The town of Tolland is predominantly white as far as race goes, with 96.76% of the town’s inhabitants belonging to that racial group. Asians are second, making up 1.19% of the population, and African-Americans are third, at 0.77%. The town’s status as a Hartford bedroom community is underlined sharply by the median household income of $101,774, with the unemployment rate currently standing at 6.3%, somewhat below the national average.

Only 2.2% of the people in Tolland are below the poverty line. Familial life is strong in the town – 74% of the 4,586 households are made up of a married couple, and 42% of households include children under 18 in them. The median age remains 37 years, however.

Location within State
Tolland is found in Tolland County, in the northeastern corner of the state. It abuts on Rockville on the west, and, as noted above, is a half hour’s commute distant from the business and job opportunities of Hartford and East Hartford. The Massachusetts state line is not too far distant to the north, while the eastward spur of Interstate 84 eventually leads to Sturbridge and even further afield, eventually joining with the Massachusetts Turnpike.
