West Hartford Town Profile


The western edge of West Hartford is the area with the most natural landscape still remaining, thanks to the presence of Metacomet Ridge. This ridge is forested, with interesting basalt rock formations from ancient vulcanism and a height of up to 700 feet over the surrounding landscape. Several reservoirs are located on the eastern flank of this ridge, and a hiking trail along its crest offers both spectacular views and a natural respite from the crowded suburban environs of West Hartford itself.

There are no less than sixteen public schools and eleven private schools within the borders of West Hartford, giving its students a wide selection of different educational opportunities. There are also three universities located in the town, including some of Hartford’s most noted institutions.

The public schools in West Hartford include eleven elementary schools, as well as three middle schools – King Philip Middle School, Sedgwick Middle School, and Bristow Middle School. The high schools include Hall High School and Conard High School. Which school a student attends is determined by the elementary school they enter – the middle school and high school follow automatically from that.

The private schools number close to a dozen, and include Saint Brigid Elementary School, Saint Thomas the Apostle Elementary School, Saint Timothy Middle School, Watkinson School, the American School for the Deaf, Renbrook School, the Solomon Schechter Day School, the German School of Connecticut, Northwest Catholic High School, the Hebrew High School of New England, and Kingswood-Oxford School.

The universities are three in number, and include the University of Hartford, the University of Connecticut Greater Hartford Campus, and Saint Joseph College.

With swarms of people holding university degrees, West Hartford has a highly educated work force and a number of major economic activities are carried on here. The colleges and universities found here are, naturally, the source of a good amount of the town’s jobs, as is the bureaucracy of West Hartford’s administration. The town and the University of Hartford are more or less tied as the largest employers in the township.

Health care institutions also produce a lot of West Hartford’s jobs. The Wiremold factory produces electronic components, while the Cheesecake Factory offers jobs in the restaurant sector and Colt’s Manufacturing Company produces the world famous rifles and pistols which bear that name. There are job opportunities in both the service and manufacturing sectors, in short, and all of these businesses require supporting firms as well.

Racially, West Hartford is 85.96% white, 4.8% Asian, and 4.78% African-American, with a fair smattering of other races or mixed races. The median household income is $79,443, with 4.5% of those who dwell within this suburb living below the poverty line and a 7.5% unemployment rate.
With a median age of 40 years and 53% of the population consisting of married couples living together, it might be expected that the number of children in this town is not high. This assumption is quite correct, since slightly less than 30% of the town’s 24,576 households have dependent children.

Location within State
West Hartford is somewhat north of the state’s center, on the western edge of Hartford, the state capital. It is joined directly to it and is, essentially, part of the same greater urban area, though it is an upper end and quite pleasant portion of the city.
