Geography
Wethersfield is a formerly Puritan town and one which was one of the first to be founded in the state of Connecticut. Despite a checkered and occasionally slightly sinister history, it is today a typical Hartford suburb, densely covered in suburban an urban development, with very little natural landscape remaining. The two largest areas of trees are a fragment of woodland on the north side of a large pond, Wethersfield Cove, and a park named Wintergreen Woods on the west side of the township.

Wethersfield stands between the Connecticut River on the east and Route 5, the Berlin Turnpike, on the west. Hartford abuts the town on the north, though the belt of trees beside Wethersfield Cove helps to mute the noise from Hartford-Brainard Airport. Most of Wethersfield consists of a dense grid of residential streets, with pleasant New England houses shaded by trees, clean, neat conditions, and a mixture of modern buildings. One of the town’s claim to fame is being struck by two meteorites within an 11 year period in the fourth quarter of the twentieth century.

Education
Wethersfield has a fairly standard array of schools for a Connecticut town, with five elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school, as well as a single Catholic educational establishment, Corpus Christi School, which teaches up to 8th grade.

The elementary schools found in Wethersfield are Webb Elementary, A.W. Hanmer School, Highcrest School, Charles Wright School, and Emerson-Williams School. Silas Deane Middle School and Wethersfield High School complete the roster of public schools in the town.

Economy
As might be expected, a good deal of economic activity in Wethersfield consists of residents commuting north into Hartford to work. The rest of the local economy is mostly oriented towards service rather than production, with service jobs, retail work, and professional occupations accounting for the lion’s share of employment in the township.

There is also a small amount of manufacturing here, making precision-engineered custom machine parts as well as a variety of high quality hand tools, including multi-pliers and specialized equipment for electricians.

Demographics
The three principal races making up the population are whites – who account for 93.19% of the residents – African-Americans – 2.09% – and Asians – 1.58%. The median income is moderate for Connecticut, though higher than the national average, at $65,836 per household annually. Around 4.4% of the people here live in poverty, while unemployment stands at 8%.

Out of the 11,095 households within the township’s boundaries, 59.45% are made up of married couples living together, while 25.2% include children under the age of 18. The median age of residents is almost a decade higher than the state’s average, at 47 years.

Location within State
Wethersfield is almost centrally located in the state, in the south central portion of Hartford County. Wethersfield is tucked against the southern border of Hartford itself, and is bounded on the east by the Connecticut River, on the far side of which lies East Hartford. Interstate 91 passes directly through the town, and Hartford-Brainard Airport provides a physical marker of its northern boundary as well.
